It was three years ago this month that I had the privilage of visiting Piz Gloria, the mountain-top headquarters of Blofeld’s nefarious institute for allergy research in Switzerland, as featured in the film of On Her Majesty’s Secret Service (1969). In reality, Piz Gloria is a revolving restaurant on the Schilthorn, but it still retains strong links to the film with its name, Bond-related displays and exhibitions, a gift shop filled with Bond goodies, and Bond-flavoured dishes on the menu in its restaurant.
Fortunately, the items on the menu are not wholly inspired by the food in the film. So, no plates piled high with chicken or potatoes! Instead, the menu offers a selection of standard, popular dishes, given a Bondian twist. One can have, for example, a 007 burger, and when I was there, I chose ‘James Bond’ spaghetti. The restaurant didn’t neglect the drinks either. The cappucino had ‘007’ sprinkled in chocolate over the top. Oh, and the 007 range of crockery was fabulous; it was just a pity it wasn’t for sale in the gift shop.
Visiting Piz Gloria was one of the best experiences I’ve ever had, being almost top of my list for must-see Bond-related locations. What tops the list? Why, Goldeneye, of course. Maybe next year…
